Garage Door Safety Inspection in Edgeley
You moved in three months ago.
In plain words
An inspection separates looking from fixing on purpose. Springs, cables, drums and bottom brackets hold the door's weight as stored tension, so the technician examines them closely, measures what can be measured and photographs what matters, without loosening or winding anything. Once the findings are written down, any adjustment or repair becomes its own planned job, done with the door secured and the stored spring tension controlled by whichever method that system calls for. This order protects the hardware as much as the people around it, and it means the report describes the door as it actually is rather than as it was left after a hurried tweak.
How the visit goesYour toddler has discovered the wall button. You want to know, from someone who checks these things for a living, that the door will stop and reverse if a small person is under it.

How the visit goes

What you have noticed, and when it started
You are part of the assessment. The technician asks when the door last felt normal, what the first change was, whether a sound comes on the way up or the way down, and whether anything happened just before: a bump from the car, a heavy snowfall, a power cut, a new remote. A door that got noisy over a year and a door that changed overnight are different stories, and the second usually has a single cause. Previous repair paperwork, the door's manual and any photos from when the house was bought are all useful. This short conversation tends to shorten the search and adds context to the report that a checklist alone would miss.
Controls, release and lock
Each way of operating the door is tried in turn: the wall control, every remote the household uses, the keypad if there is one, and the lock or vacation button that disables the remotes. The technician checks that the wall control is mounted out of a small child's reach and within sight of the door, that batteries are fresh, and that the manual release cord hangs within reach with its handle intact and releases and re-engages the trolley cleanly. Any manual slide lock on the door is checked to make sure it is disengaged, since a door locked by hand while the opener is connected is a common cause of a bent rail.
Three checks you can repeat each month
The inspection leaves you with a short routine. Once a month, with the door closed, pull the release cord and lift the door by hand; it should move easily and hold at waist height. Reconnect the opener, lay a flat board on the floor and send the door down; it should reverse when it touches. Then start it closing and wave a broom handle through the photo-eye beam; it should reverse before contact. Each of these takes under a minute and mirrors what the technician did. If any of the three behaves differently from the day of the inspection, that is the moment to call, while it is still a small job.

What affects the quote
Manuals and unusual models
A door or opener with no label, a discontinued model or a custom lift setup means the test procedure has to be established rather than looked up, which adds time.
The kind of report you need
A plain findings sheet suits most households. A photographed, measured report for a sale, a rental file or a property manager takes longer to prepare and is quoted as such.
Access to overhead track or a locked mechanical room
Some tracks run behind storage or into a locked mechanical room, and reaching every bracket and fixture takes longer when a ladder or a key has to be found first. Clearing a path to the track ahead of the visit lets the inspection move through the whole door without interruption.
What to have ready
- What prompted the call, and when did you first notice it?
- When was the door last serviced, and do you have the paperwork?
- Have you tried lifting the door by hand, and how did it feel?
Garage Door Safety Inspection: questions
QuestionsMy opener is old and has no photo eyes. Can it still be inspected?
Yes. Older openers rely on contact reversal alone, so the board test carries more weight and is run carefully against the maker's procedure, along with the manual balance check, the force setting and the release. The report records what the opener has and how it performed. An opener built before photo eyes became standard is flagged for replacement in the report, since makers recommend moving off that generation of opener rather than treating photo eyes as a nice-to-have.
What is the board test?
It is the contact-reversal check. A short length of 2x4 lies flat on the floor in the middle of the opening and the door is closed from the wall button. When the bottom edge meets the wood, the door should halt and travel back up without help. Passing shows the opener's down-force and travel limits are set to back off from something solid. The technician never substitutes a hand or foot for the board.
Is the inspection a repair visit?
It is a look and a record first. Small maintenance items such as lubrication, cleaning and aligning the photo eyes and tightening fasteners can be done on the spot if you wish. Anything involving spring tension, cables, drums, worn rollers or damaged sections is written up with a clear explanation and quoted as its own job, so you decide with the full picture in front of you.
